The Southeast Chapter American Bamboo Society, Inc is organized exclusively for charitable, educational and scientific purposes.


The Southeast Chapter shall promote knowledge of and interest in Bamboo: to present educational programs about bamboo, including meetings, classes and publications; to encourage the growth and propagation of bamboo by botanical gardens; to aid in the importation and quarantine of bamboo according to USDA guidelines; to provide support facilities where records, books, publications and other pertinent information will be made accessible to the Chapter's members and to the general public; to engage in and encourage such projects and research as may further the best interests of the community and the objectives of the Chapter; to co-operate with other organizations, foundations and institutions in the futherance of its objectives and interest in the knowledge of bamboo.

3rd Annual Bamboo Festival

At the NC Arboretum July 11-12,2009

The following is the schedule for the festival:

Saturday, July 11th

  • 9:00 - Bidding Opens For Silent Auction
  • 9:30 - Lecture- “Japanese Madake” Health Properties of Bamboo Leafs Tea by Mr. Emanuel Johnson, Greeneville, TN
  • 11:00 - Lecture- Rivercane: Basics & Benefits by Adam Griffith
  • 12:00 – 1:00 LUNCH
  • 1:00 Lecture- Bamboo: Past, Present, & Future by Stephen Garton
  • 2:30pm –Lecture- Bamboo: The Basics; Growing, Maintenance, Containment, & Identification By Mike Hotchkiss
  • 3:30pm – LIVE PLANT AUCTION – Adam Turtle & Tom Harlow
  • 4:30pm – SILENT AUCTION ENDS – Tom Harlow
  • 5:00pm – Festival Ends

Sunday, July 12th

  • 10:00am – Festival Opens
  • 11:00am –Lecture/Demo- Crafting With Bamboo – Making Bamboo Containers by Carol Stangler
  • 12:00 – 1:00 LUNCH
  • 1:00pm –Lecture- Landscaping With Running Bamboo by Richard Argo
  • 2:30pm –Demo- Building Bamboo Garden Structures & Fences by Kent Stewart
  • Festival Ends
