DESCRIPTIONS OF PRESENTATIONS

SATURDAY, 10:00 AM-CLASSROOM 1
Title: Dawn in the West - A New Age for Bamboo by Adam Turtle.

The West is finally waking up to the potentials of bamboo as an agroindustrial crop. The talk will enumerate, illustrate and discuss some of the options.

Adam Turtle is co-Director of Earth Advocates Research Farm (EARF) in Southern Middle Tennessee and co-owner of ‘Our’ Bamboo Nursery where he and partner/wife Sue work with over 250 temperate bamboo species and forms. With over 27 years of bamboo experience and coming from a background in ethno- botanical research (non-academic), Adam speaks, writes and consults widely both in the U.S. and internationally and is a Fellow of the Linnean Society. Classes on working with Bamboo are also offered at EARF.

SATURDAY, 1:00 PM-CLASSROOM 1

We will briefly go over how bamboo is used all over the world and then talk about various traits of bamboo that make it so desirable such as color, variegation, texture, size, internode and node difference and more. We will also cover how to grow bamboo indoors and how to care for it and how easy it is to share with friends.

David Linvill is the University of Georgia’s Horticulture County Agent for Savannah, Georgia for past 16 years and also past interim Superintendent of the famous Coastal Garden and Bamboo Farm. David co-wrote “Growing Bamboo in Georgia” which is available on the web.

Dr. Yang Yuming, Professor and PhD, is vice president of Southwest Forestry College, Kunming, Yunnan Provence, China. He is the Director of the Institute of Bamboo and Rattan Research, Southwest Forestry College since 1997.

Sunday, 3:00 PM, Classroom 1
Title: Introduction to Landscaping with Running Bamboo by Richard Argo

Landscaping with running bamboo offers the promise of a serene grove, a hardy “green screen,” and a plant that provides canes for crafting and shoots for cooking. However, not all types of bamboo are suited for all site conditions, and establishing an invasive plant in a neighborhood setting can pose unique challenges. Richard will present an overview of how different species of running bamboo can be used successfully to achieve a variety of landscaping goals for homes and business. He will also discuss bamboo sources, common myths, dealing with bamboo spread, and more. The lecture concludes with a question and answer session.

Richard Argo opened Argo Bamboo Farm (west of Atlanta) in 2002. In the place where his grandfather once grew traditional Southern row crops, the farm now grows and sells the types of running bamboo most often sought by homeowners, gardeners, and landscapers in the Atlanta Metro area and surrounding region.

October 11, 2008
Fall Clean-Up Day at Byron/ Gathering at Dick George’s Gardens

There will be a cleanup day in the bamboo groves of the USDA temperate bamboo germplasm collection on October 11th, 2008, at 9 am at the USDA Southeastern Fruit and Tree Nut Research Laboratory in Byron, GA. There are 90 accessions of over 70 species and cultivars of bamboo. Participants can dig plants and take home poles thinned from the groves. Anyone wanting to dig more than a few plants is encouraged to make an appointment to dig on Friday, October 10. Contact Melanie Harrison Dunn, (770) 412-4097 for more information.

DIRCTIONS:
To get to the USDA Lab take I-75 to exit 149 and head east on GA49 (left turn if coming from the north and right if coming from the south). Approximately one block from the interstate, turn right on Dunbar Rd. (just past the Krystal) and go 1/4 mile. The entrance to the Lab is on the left.

We are combining the fall Byron cleanup day with a gathering at chapter member Dick George’s 100-year old homestead in Macon, GA. Dick and wife Rusty live a short twenty-minute drive from the Byron USDA station, so we will be gathering there after the cleanup work is done. Dick is a master gardener and his extensive gardens incorporate several varieties of bamboo among many other diverse plantings.

Dick and Rusty are looking forward to hosting the chapter social. If there will be family members who won't attend the cleanup, they're welcome to come to the George's early and cool-out. (It should still be warm enough to swim in their 50' lap pool.) And those who'd like to camp there on Friday/Saturday are invited. (The George's hosted a benefit in May for the local Loaves & Fishes ministry which more than 75 attended.) In addition to a large parking area for RVs, there are lots of tent sites and a 60' covered front porch if you just want to bring a cot!

Dick & Rusty are offering pizza, salad and desert for Saturday's supper, with all donations going to the Chapter treasury. (You're encouraged to BYOB for libations other than soft drinks.) Their kitchen is available for anyone who can prepare a dish with bamboo shoots for the group. Anyone with dietary restrictions or concerns, please contact Dick ahead of time so that we can accommodate everyone who wants to attend.

They do need to know how many to plan for, including overnight stays. Please email Dick at rsgeorge@mindspring.com or call them @ 478 471-1315 at least several days before the event.

DIRECTIONS:
Leave Byron on I-75 North and take I-475 North when it branches left from I-75. Get off at Zebulon Road Exit (#9) and go right (toward Macon) for 1.7 miles. Lowes and Walmart on left and Kroger on right. Continue on Zebulon Road through traffic light intersection where Bass Road (left) turns into Foster Road (right). In about 1/2 mile, at the end of large Carlyle Place development on right, look for two rural mail boxes, stucco marker with "5276" and "Private Drive" sign. Turn right up long driveway to parking lot.

November 7-8
2008 ABS General Meeting
San Francisco, CA

“Urban Bamboo” will be the theme for the 2008 Annual Meeting of the American Bamboo Society which will be held at the San Francisco Zoo. November is the time of the year when San Francisco is at its most beautiful. The weather is mellow and trees are just starting to take on fall colors, and it is a great time for the ABS Annual meeting. Mark your calendars for November 7 & 8 – plus the optional days for the ABS events in San Francisco!

Members of the Northern California Chapter of the ABS (NCC) are inviting specialists from around the country and the world to this event that will be held at the San Francisco Zoo, located on San Francisco's western shoreline. The sixty acre Zoo has a well-established bamboo landscape utilizing many species which grow in the unique summer fog for which the region is famous. Participants will be given time to wander the Zoo grounds and enjoy the grand collection of flora and fauna — it's one of the finest Zoos in the nation!

REGISTRATION and OPTIONAL EVENT fees have not yet been determined but will be listed here when available. For additional coverage, see the upcoming June and August issues of BAMBOO, the Magazine of the American Bamboo Society. Changes in the program dates and times may occur as arrangements become finalized. Please refer to the ABS website http://www.americanbamboo.org where there is a link for the Annual Meeting
